Petra Murphy

Sea urchins, starfish, coral, and the colours of tropical marine life inspired my latest body of work.

Bowls, vases, spheres and spiked rings may be used individually or stacked to create a sculptural effect. The forms may be rearranged in an infinite variety of ways to suit individual whim. Vibrant contrasting colours coat the interior and exterior surfaces of the vessels. All pieces are functional and fired to earthenware temperature.

Inspiration for the porcelain cups came after an exchange visit to Kyoto. The small drinking vessels are perched on heavily textured "saucer" support rings,.

Interiors are glazed, while the exterior surfaces remain unglazed and highly polished, with just a splash of colour and crackle. Clayworks "Southern Ice" porcelain proved ideal for throwing these.
